Harmans Cross today, Monday 18 June 2007, hit the headlines when at 12:38 approx, at Quarr Farm Road Railway Crossing on the outskirts of Harmans Cross, a Link Rider coach with only the driver on board drove in front of a Swanage Railway train of Standard Class 4 2-6-4 tank engine 80104 and five coaches. Whilst the train did not derail, the coach was dragged some 80 feet along the side of the track.

The crossing is electronically controlled with lights that activate long before a train reaches the crossing, and require that any vehicle stop to allow the train to pass before proceeding.

The coach driver was seriously injured, but these injuries are not believed to be life threatening. He was lifted to hospital by air-ambulance to Dorchester Hospital 30 minutes after the crash. None of the train passengers were injured.

The incident was attended by three fire/rescue vehicles and numerous police and medical vehicles including the air ambulance.

The train with approx 40 passengers on board was on route from Swanage to Corfe Castle/Norden was split in two with the engine and first coach left on site for investigation, and the remaining four coaches with passengers returned to Swanage.

The crossing has been controlled by an automatic system for several years and in theory such an incident should not happen. There have however been alleged instances of this coach companies drivers jumping the lights on a number of occasions. At the time the train would have been doing about 12mph.

This of course brings back memories from December 26th 1999, when a driver was airlifted to hospital after his car was hit by a steam train as he tried to race it over the same unmanned crossing.

The 23-year-old had to be cut free from the Vauxhall Cavalier after it was carried along the track.

The train was taking families on a Santa Special to Corfe Castle. No passengers were hurt.

That night the driver was said to be stable with chest and shoulder injuries.

Harman's Cross, between Corfe Castle and Swanage in Dorset, on the A351, is usually called the village of Harman's Cross but is a village without the proverbial Church and/or Public House.
There is however a chapel hidden away, this was created by the founder/owner of the local Foleys Garage.

The village has fallen together between the Purbeck Hills and the villages of Worth Matravers, Langton Matravers, Kingston and Corfe Castle.

Popular stories for the name of Harman's Cross are:

  1. A long time ago a man, possibly hanged for murder, such a disgraceful crime that he had to be buried away from normal humanity and it was where we now find Harman's Cross, ie. the cross where Harman was buried.
  2. A man called Harman hanged himself from a tree that is adjacent to where the crossroads now are.
  3. At one time a Mr Harman was the only person living where the crossroads now are.

The village store which evolved as the conversion of a house and included a Sub Post Office. You could sit on the lawn outside, enjoy an ice-cream and/or drink and watch the world go by. It closed in February 1997 when the then owners saw it more as a piece of saleable property than as an ongoing business (the remains shown in picture). After several years of ownership exchange, problems with planning permissions etc., in 2002, 3 bungalows did get built , although by rural standards appear to have overcrowded the space available. They priced out in the region of 350,000 which seems a little excessive for their sizes, but is not untoward in the present financial climate where folk are prepared to pay that sort of money for a brand new house/bungalow in a desirable part of the country.

Generally speaking you are unlikely to find any property in Harman's Cross less than 200,000, a lot more than that sum is nearer the truth.

Close to what was the village store and now 3 bungalows, stands Foleys Garage, both as garage and car sales. In the absence of the Sub Post Office section of the store the garage took on that function but with limited hours. The adage that comes with that is, "use it or lose it" !

In 2006 Foleys Garage had a change of ownership with a conversion including a Spar Store. It is now known as Moonfleet Cars.

The village itself comprises some 190 properties which are not so apparent to many who just drive through without ever stopping. In respect of driving there exists a 40mph speed limit which is flouted probably every hour of every day. Reputedly, suggestions of speed camera installation are rejected on the strength of "no fatality, no speed camera".

The village now has a privately owned Purbeck Vineyard which apparently should be bottling in 2003 or 2004.

The Steam Railway has a station in Harman's Cross close to which a number of steam and motor rallies occur during the year. The high point of the year is of course the village fete and gymkhana at the adjacent village hall and fields on August Bank Holiday.
